In a world of filters, Facetune, and false information, globally renowned singer, songwriter, and actor Anitta is a true breath of fresh air. Not because she doesn’t care how she looks—she does—but because she doesn’t care what others have to say about it.
Ever authentic, Anitta has previously opened up to about her plastic surgery procedures and why she chose to have them—“because I wanted to, not because I was ashamed of my body, simply because I wanted to make some changes and I liked the result”—and has always remained true to the notion of transparency.
“People are always like, ‘Love yourself.’ But then they never say when they changed something. If you want to change, go there and change it, don’t waste your time caring about it and what other people think. I have some friends that are like, ‘Oh, I wish I could change this or that. But I’m so afraid of what people are going to say.’ I’m like, ‘What? You don’t change, because of what people are going to say?!’”
Now, almost three years on and as she is revealed to be the new brand partner of Rihanna’s beloved lingerie label Savage x Fenty, how has her relationship with body image evolved?
“I never really cared about what other people might think of my appearance or about the plastic surgeries I’ve undergone. That’s why I’m very open about these things,” she says.
“The procedures I did—or the others I might end up doing in the future—were just for my personal well-being, to feel good about myself. The secret of beauty is feeling good about yourself.”
But not every fashion brand is tackling the body image conversation head-on like Rihanna, and while there is a lot of lip service surrounding the topic, there is unfortunately still a long way to go.
“We can see some changes in the fashion industry coming from some brands,” admits Anitta. “However, I’d be lying if I said this is already a global phenomenon and that every single brand is really connected to these ideals. But Savage x Fenty definitely is one of them. I have great hopes for the industry, one day, realizing the value of diversity.”
Since launching her lingerie label in 2018, Rihanna has taken it upon herself to disrupt the industry and truly redefine what’s seen as sexy in the mainstream.
Alongside an accessible price point, Savage x Fenty has, since its launch, showcased its vision on runways and in campaigns featuring models of all sizes, genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and body types.
“Inclusivity is the love language Savage x Fenty uses to embrace femininity,” explains Anitta. “We should all be able to express our sensuality and just how good we feel about ourselves, and Savage x Fenty is all about celebrating this freedom of being. I’m such a fan.”
Admitting that she sadly “dealt with some health issues” last year, though, Anitta’s learned a valuable lesson about the importance of knowing her body’s limitations.
“I’m super good now, treating what needs to be treated, but that has taught me to be gentler to myself. To respect my body limitations and to always save some time to take care of myself, body and mind.”
As she’s modeling the new Crystal Crush collection in the campaign to accompany the announcement, there’s no denying that Anitta has found a brand that echoes her spirit through and through.
“Savage x Fenty resonates a lot with me because my work and my art are also about love, confidence, and feminine empowerment. It means the world to be a part of such an important movement.”
